Six-year-old hit by car
When we first met him, two years after the accident, he had spent long periods in hospital. Once very energetic, he was now confined to a wheelchair. He had speech and memory problems. Lacking a downstairs toilet, the house was unsuitable for his needs and his parents were finding it very hard to cope.
What we did:
- Recruited a neuro physiotherapist, plus speech and language therapists.
- Initiated a ‘second skin suit’ to aid control of movement.
- Helped the family to find appropriate housing. Liaised with the architect over adaptations.
- Assessed and recommended such essentials as: seating; wheelchairs; bath; tricycle; vehicle.
- Recruited a buddy/carer to assist with therapy and care.
- Provided ‘hands on’ Paediatric Occupational Therapy and enabled such activities as horse riding, wheelchair sports and holidays.
- Worked alongside school staff.
- Provided reports and information for legal professionals.
- Supported and advised the client and his family on the options available and such future choices as college.
The result:
- At 16, the client’s speech is clear and he is coping with his memory problems.
- He is achieving a few unaided steps.
- He enjoys cycling, abseiling and camping.
- Recently, he bought an old military jeep, which he exhibits at shows with his buddy.
And soon, he is off to college.
