Independent Living Solutions - Case Histories - Child’s problems worsened by accident

12 year-old's problems worsened by accident.
A boy with a history of behaviour problems ran onto a busy road and was hit by a car. He suffered a severe brain injury, as well as a broken leg. Despite providing a positive and nurturing environment, his parents found his impulsive, socially inappropriate and aggressive behaviour increasingly difficult to deal with.
What we did:
Recruited an experienced support worker, who worked directly with the boy, as well as providing respite for the parents, while we secured suitable residential education.
Liaised with school staff, to optimise the value of educational and recreational programmes.
Carried out risk assessments at home and school.
Assessed and recommended essential personal independence equipment.
Recruited a physiotherapist.
The result:
Now 17, our client attends a safe and caring residential school.
His behaviour is more acceptable.
He enjoys academic and leisure pursuits – especially caring for animals.
He is renowned for his humour and has made several friends.
