Fiona is a highly experienced, specialist Moving and Handling Advisor with over twenty years’ experience working with adults and children with complex disabilities.

Fiona originally graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Sport Science – majoring in anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of movement and her final research project was published in the British Journal of Sport Science.

Her holistic approach and willingness to positively manage risk to maximise a client’s contribution to a transfer has seen great results in terms of promoting independence.

Moving and Handling Service Coordinator, and Advisor, ILS Rehabilitation Solutions

Moving and Handling Advisor, Surrey Schools. Helping to make Surrey schools and activities accessible to all. Responsible for equipment need assessment, provision and training; sling/standing harness assessment, provision and training; risk assessments and handling plans with photo instructions for pupils requiring physical assistance; mentoring and supervision of 18 trainers/risk assessors in 8 SLD schools; advisory role for community OTs working with children with complex disabilities; mentor for mainstream school trainer; assessment, training and equipment provision (where necessary) for school trips, day and residential.

Back Care Advisor for Carers. Responsible for providing advice, support and training for parents, relatives and friends caring for someone at home; offering advice on equipment that would help liaising with OTs to facilitate the provision of appropriate equipment to promote independence and inclusion.

Moving and Handling Trainer. Responsible for providing moving and handling training for care workers in residential and nursing homes and also for social services home based care teams; reviewing equipment provision in these settings and making recommendations to benefit the service users and the care workers.

Special Needs Assistant. Pre-school setting, key stage 1 and key stage 2 school settings.
