Laura Porter - BSc (Hons) OT

Laura qualified in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours, in Occupational Therapy from Exeter University. As a rotational therapist she gained experience in clinical areas including orthopaedic, stroke and amputee rehabilitation, acute general medicine and neurology. Whist working for local authority and housing she gained vast experience in both major and minor adaptations and re-housing issues. In New Zealand Laura covered various specialties in a large acute hospital then went on to focus on post-surgical orthopaedics.


  • Case management of children and young people with complex needs, including those with an acquired brain injury.
  • Providing assessment, equipment prescription, treatment and advice to clients with a wide range of congenital and/or long term conditions.
  • Involvement in assessing and planning for, and securing funding for housing adaptations through to completion.
  • Carrying out initial moving and handling risk assessments and providing equipment.
  • Writing clear concise comprehensive needs assessments.
  • Liaising with multi-disciplinary team members and coordinating effective rehabilitation.
  • Staff recruitment, supervision, appraisal and training.
  • Working in community settings in both in the NHS and Local Authority as well as the voluntary sector both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
  • Liaising and working with equipment manufacturers when required to achieve solutions outside the remit of statutory services.

Key Skills

Laura utilises good interpersonal and communication skills within her work to enable her to develop excellent working relationships with her clients, their families and their wider support networks. Her broad experience has enabled her to develop a repertoire of skills to manage clients whose situations are incredibly complex providing clear person centred solutions to issues that may arise. Laura has the ability to work with a range of professionals from both the private and public sector to effectively articulate clinical, functional and lifestyle needs, to bridge gaps and create clearer communication.

Occupational Therapist with Rehab Solutions.

Present Cornwall and Isles of Scilly PCH: Occupational Therapist with Contingency Workforce. This has largely involved work in rapid intervention and crisis management, to prevent hospital admission.

2009 Canterbury District Health Board, NZ: Occupational Therapist with Contingency Workforce. This largely took place in an acute general hospital covering neurology, respiratory, paediatrics and orthopaedics.

2007-2008 Brynmawr Social Services: Senior Occupational Therapist / Newport Social Services: Senior Occupational Therapist. Full occupational therapy community assessments, advising on minor and major adaptations, and equipment provision. Adult client group with a wide range of physical and mental health diagnoses including neurological conditions such as MS and CVA, and conditions such as Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, and COPD.

2004-2007 Torfaen County Borough Council: Housing Occupational Therapist. Advising on rehousing issues for clients with medical needs, as well as minor and major adaptations to local authority properties.

2004 Caerphilly Social Services: Occupational Therapist. Undertaking full occupational therapy community assessments, including minor/major housing adaptations, equipment provision, and moving and handling assessments.

2003-2004 Plymouth Primary Care Trust: Amputee Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist. Ward based therapy, patient/carer education, assessment and provision of equipment, and complex discharge planning.

2002-2003 Plymouth Primary Care Trust: Rotational Occupational Therapist. Areas included orthopaedic and stroke rehabilitation, acute general medicine and neurology.
